Spring Recruitment 2012 is officially underway. Yes, that's right its just past 12 am on January 30th. You know what that means Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors, it is time to brisk the cold, get free food and meet cool dudes. This could be the decision of a life time. Good luck to all chapters and potential new members, be safe and have fun most importantly.

The Balanced Man Scholarship enables the DC Alpha chapter of SigEp to recognize outstanding men who exemplify our philosophy by living balanced lives and striving for excellence in every endeavor amidst the challenging GWU academic environment. The Scholarship is open to all male GWU freshmen. The winners will be determined based on their overall commitment to the pursuit of a Sound Mind and a Sound Body. Emphasis is placed on academics, athletic involvement, leadership experience, and community service.
If you are not interested in Greek Life, it is not a problem. You can still sign up for the scholarship, but I would stress considering Greek due to the social and philanthropic opportunities it offers to the GW campus as well as the city of Washington at large.

Tuesday, April 12, 2011: The Inter-Fraternity Council would like to congratulate the members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon organization on rejoining the GW Greek Community. The IFC Presidents voted unanimously today to allow SAE back on as a transitionary member. The conditions of transitionary membership include a non-voting status at IFC meetings; in addition the chapter’s advisor will be required to inform the IFC that he attended every event held by the chapter. In order to qualify for transitionary membership SAE had to meet the qualifications established under Article II, Section E of the IFC By-Laws. The IFC is excited to embrace SAE into our ever growing community and will offer our full support in their transition to a full membership. Currently SAE has six members, who are fully committed to the ideals of the Greek community and are dedicated to restoring their organization to prominence. SAE has a great deal of historic value to our community, as they were the first fraternity to join our campus and among only a handful of fraternities nationwide to be founded prior to the American Civil war.

Washington, DC — March 31, 2011 —George Williams, a junior foreign-exchange student from Manchester, UK, was awarded the inaugural Stone and Holt Weeks Humanitarian Award at this year’s U.S. Armed Forces Wheelchair Basketball Game at American University in Washington, DC. The award, named after brothers who tragically lost their lives in a car accident, is given by the national office of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity in order to honor someone who has demonstrated a serious commitment to philanthropy.
George, studying at GW for just this school year, was initiated into the fraternity last December. He will be taking part this summer in the Journey of Hope, an annual cross-country bike ride put on by Pi Kappa Phi each summer. Each participant must raise at least $5000 to participate and commit to an entire summer of biking. The trek starts in San Francisco, CA and ends in Washington, DC, on the lawn of the Capitol Building. George is one of 5 brothers from George Washington’s Theta Zeta chapter of Pi Kappa Phi participating this summer. Feel free to contact me if you would be interested in interviewing George, or any of the other Journey of Hope participants.

The Presidents voted to allow both organizations back on “Active” status. This status accords full voting rights and membership privileges to both groups, but does not supersede any sanctions given by the University. The Inter-Fraternity Council will continue to support both organizations as they move forward to remake themselves internally and add to the community as a whole. While there are no excuses for the events of last semester, it is time to move forward. We feel this is just the first step in rebuilding the community and making Greek life a stronger, more positive influence on campus.

A new chapter in the legacy of Greek life

If you are reading this, there is a good chance you are aware of the challenges the Greek-life community has faced in the past few months. If you are reading this, there is a good chance you are aware of the challenges the Greek-life community has faced in the past few months. Our once thriving community now appears weakened after several chapters were under investigation for hazing, alcohol and drug-related changes throughout the fall.
But that is old news and we are not weakened. While there are no excuses for the events of last semester, it is time to move on. As a community, we need to support the chapters' decisions to accept the charges and sanctions the University handed them. But these chapters were also given an opportunity to be contributing members of the community again. These chapters know they have made mistakes, and are making sure their transgressions are not repeated.
Greek life always has been and will be an important part of the GW experience. Chapters of the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Association and Multicultural Greek Council have all shown their impact on campus life in numerous ways, including strong chapter GPAs, community service and philanthropic efforts, as well as promising leadership across this campus and beyond. In these past two weeks, I have been amazed at the continued strength of this community in the face of challenges.
Just in the past few days I, along with the rest of the IFC Executive Board, made an effort to visit the rush events for all fraternities on campus. Freshmen, sophomores and even some juniors turned out in high numbers in order to learn more about the possibility of joining a fraternity at GW. Close to 200 men attended rush events. Of the presidents and recruitment chairs I spoke with, all told me these were the best spring rushes they had seen.
And I'm going to make sure that positive experience continues for the brothers and new members. As someone who is actively involved in the drafting of the new self-governance policy, I believe the change will make our community more accountable. I urge all who are judging this policy on its name alone to attempt to do more to understand it rather than criticize it.
The policy - jointly crafted by Student Judicial Services and the IFC - is meant to implement education and enforcement of the values we are supposed to uphold as a community. When finalized, SJS will use its discretion to determine which cases it will hear and which it will delegate to the IFC Judicial Board to hear and issue judgment upon. Even in cases that are sent directly to SJS, the IFC Judicial Board has the ability to hold its own hearing and issue punishments in concurrence with SJS. By empowering the Greek-life community, the University has given us an incentive to become part of the process to enforce the standards we hold ourselves to.
Every fraternity member I have spoken with these past few weeks is excited to begin a new kind of relationship with the administration, and is dedicated to making sure our judicial representatives are active and effective in their judgments.
There is still no excuse for the actions that took place last semester. That being said, the Greek-life community is ready to be an even stronger and greater positive force within GW. I know that every member of the Greek-life community and administration official I have spoken with is motivated and excited to rebuild our community's image. It is time for us all to focus on moving forward.
Frank Gervasio is the president of the Interfraternity Council and a member of Beta Theta Pi.
